DIY Challenge 2: Blocking a corner of the 5x5

Tiling with Trominos:

If we block the corner in a 5×5 grid, is it possible to tile the grid using trominos?

If we block the center in a 5×5 grid, is it possible to tile the grid using trominos?

What students worked out8

  • Student 13

    Q1)If we block the corner in a 5×5 grid, is it possible to tile the grid using trominos?
    Ans1) No, Three squares are remaining.
    Q2)If we block the center in a 5×5 grid, is it possible to tile the grid using trominos?
    Ans2) Yes, No squares are remaining.

  • Student 7

    In 5×5 grid if we use blocking square in middle then it would be possible, if we use blocking square in corner then it would not be possible.

  • Student 2

    CORNERS==N.P
    CENTRE===P
    IN THEORY, IF WE DO PATTERN IT IS POSSIBLE AS WE WILL GET ALL 3 COLOURS EVERY TIME BUT, IN THIS IN THE CORNER IT FORMS A PERPENDICULAR LINE SO THEREFORE, CORNER ARE NOT POSSIBLE
    A1/2/3/4/5
    B1/2/3/4/5
    C1/2/4/5
    D1/2/3/4/5
    E1/2/3/4/5
    ALL THESE ARE NOT POSSIBLE IF THESE BLOCKS ARE BLOCKED IN A 5×5 ONLY
    THE CENTER IS POSSIBLE 🙂

  • Student 1

    Its possible with blocking square in the middle but not side because in the one blocking the middle it has 4 3×2 grids left to fill in where as the corner blocking doesn’t have a 3×2 squares

  • Student 17

    First is not possible second one is possible

  • Student 4

    Sir if we block the centre square then it is possible to fill the 5×5 grid with trominoes

  • Student 3

    My finding

  • Student 3

    blocking corners NOT POSSIBLe
