Objectives :
- Explain what it means for a number to have another number as its multiple
- List multiples of a natural number
- Check whether a number is a multiple of another
- Solve problems involving multiples by any method
Why?
We may not realize but we use multiples all the time in counting and grouping of objects. When we package material in boxes and cartons, we use multiples to find the number of boxes required. We usually count the number of people in a large group in multiples. Here, we aim to build the skill of identifying situations where we are using multiples rather than just the ability to list multiples.
Lesson:
In this lesson, multiples are not explicitly taught but we together solve some problems involving where kids themselves discover the usability of multiples.
Kids try out a simple ‘Do Now’ Problem (Q21 in the worksheet), which sets up the class for the problems we are going to work on.
Then, we discuss Problem 2 and Problem 3. Kids work themselves on these problems with some inputs and guiding questions from the teacher.
We discuss different strategies to solve problems and try to understand which works well according to the situation.
