Objectives :
- We will be able to explain the need and meaning of arithmetic operations : Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division
Outcomes:
- We will understand addition and subtraction in past as well as present context.
- We will see multiplication as grouping together of things.
- We will understand how a x b is different from b x a.
- We will understand that division (a/b) translates into “Number of b’s contained in a”.
Why :
A clear understanding of the actual meaning and need of the basic symbols of arithmetic operations is necessary to have a strong and fearless base in mathematics.
Lesson Plan :
In this lesson, through a variety of discussions on simple real life problems, the idea and need of arithmetic and operations is discovered by the students. There is also ample opportunity for practicing and consolidating the ideas generated.
