Evolution and history of numbers – Introducing number systems.

Learner Outcomes :

  1. Understand the need for numbers in historical context and today’s context.
  2. Appreciate that a number system is a human construct and we can define it in any way and using any symbols.
  3. Understand how numbers have evolved over time.

Why?

Numbers and counting have not always been the way we see them. The numbers which we use today are just symbols or drawings. What gives meaning to them are the rules which we made to govern the symbols. The fundamental breakdown in math begins in very early childhood if we do not understand this fact and take numbers for granted. Hence, it becomes very essential to understand that the number system is a myth in which the whole world believes in, and it is a very useful myth making life easier for people for thousands of years. But it have not always been the way it is today and will not be the same always. It has evolved over time and will keep evolving.

Plan :

This is a 60 minute lesson. Being the first lesson, it also consists of some routines like taking notes and dividing students into groups. Since I plan on a notebook, I will be sharing the scanned PDF’s for most of the lesson plans.
